Sir Nicholas Slanning of Pendennis

Sir Nicholas Slanning (1606-1643) spent his early life at Maristow, near Plymouth. He left England, aged 23, “to learn the arts of war” in the Low Countries.

Slanning's were one of five Cornish foot regiments formed in October 1641 by Sir Ralph Hopton. They were involved in the battles at Braddock Down, Modbury, Polston Bridge, Sourton Down, and Stratton. Thereafter, combined with Prince Maurice's men, they took Taunton, Bridgewater, Dunster Castle and Wells ending up, after the victory at Lansdown, taking Bath.

In July 1643, Slanning commanded one of the three tercia that stormed Bristol. Although the action was a success, Sir Nicholas Slanning was mortally wounded by a musket ball and died three weeks later more...

Slanning's Regiment Today

The present day Regiment is part of the new windowSealed Knot Society. It's members come from all walks of life, and from all over the country.

The Regiment consists of a pike block, musket block, and an artillery battery. Non-combatants include drummers and goodwives, or camp followers, who accompany the regiment onto the battlefield providing a vital support role.

Women are welcome to join any arm of service and fight on the field, although dressed as men! However, once the battle is over and its time to relax over a pint or three in the beer tent, or local hostelry, they generally take the opportunity to change into more constraining, but aluring, attire - tightly corded bodices being fashionable in the 17th century.

The regiment also includes many children who may become apprentice soldiers before being allowed on the field once they are 16 more...
